Recently the British jazz poet Bryn Fortey sent me a couple of poems that differ significantly from his customary style. I thought that I would publish them tonight to show you a different side of this familiar poet. The first is a tribute to his late wife and was even performed at her funeral service.
DARK HAIRED ITALIAN GIRL
She’s a dark haired Italian girl
A dark haired Italian girl
When sighing sighs or flashing eyes
She’s a woman...yes she’s my woman
She’s a dark haired Italian girl
She set out from S’Angelo and brought her Latin
charms
She set out from S’Angelo and ended in my arms
She’s the girl in my life...and she’s my wife
She’s a dark haired Italian girl
A dark haired Italian girl
One minute thrills, next minute chills
From this woman...oh what a woman
She’ a dark haired Italian girl
She set out
from S’Angelo to travel overseas
She set out from S’Angelo and brought me to my knees
She’s the girl in my life...and she’s my wife
She’s a dark haired Italian girl
A dark haired Italian girl
Sweet loving slips from her sweet lips
She’s a woman...yes she’s my woman
She’s a dark haired Italian girl
A dark haired Italian girl
And she’s my wife.

BOY WITH A GUN
No time for loving ladies...boy on the run
No time for might’s or maybe’s...no mother’s son
This time the tension’s growing...boy on the street
This time the cracks are showing...here comes the
heat
Boy with a gun now, baby...boy with a gun
No image no reflection...boy with no face
No saviour no redemption...no saving grace
Time soon to face his showdown...boy can’t take more
We’ll read the tabloid lowdown...blood death and
gore
Boy with a gun now, baby...boy with a gun
Mad dog, they don’t want you ‘round
Mad dog, they’re gonna shoot you down
They’ll say:
Shoot him
Kill him
He’s just a boy with a gun

Let's finish with some music. I thought I'd post some Italian jazz. The first is Paolo Conte's "Via Con Me": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0o_rGhcBgME&list=PLRks91AzIHHfPKXmb67ODDmPvESWazAvg
The second is the Renzo Ruggiero Group with Antonella Ruggiero: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X03V2hEe8dI
The third is Cristina Zavallo and the Italian Jazz Orchestra: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bk7jQ3oBFeM
I do want to include two songs that fits with Bryn's last poem as well. The first is Gil Scott-Heron's "Inner City Blues": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-X_KYMULPHM
The second is his "Peace Go With You, Brother": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U9woebI-td4
