Words and Images (part 1)

One of the blessings of starting this e-zine has been getting to know poet Felino A. Soriano and photographer Mary Judkins on Facebook and e-mail.  Tonight I am posting their collaboration.  Mary took the photograph above at Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah, GA, which in turn inspired Felino to write the following poem:

colorful thinker

—after an image by Mary Judkins

prior accolades
slant into the burgeon-bouquet leaping from the
oscillating wisdom

                              left within pulsating shadows &
such silvering
patina has
entrusted rust’s aging method to
engage with kaleidoscopic
syllables, their
truant prose always
recollecting purpose upon
return to the tongue &
mirror of her mind’s altering
fascinations, fixated measures
elongating an already notion of wisdom’s
spectral

                                                 impulses                        interpreting
environs & accompanying versions of moments’
isolated measures—

& her thinking instructs tonal
discoveries, synesthetic

motions rotate remedies of demise’s
depressive articulation,

                                                                              &
                                                                   either
                                                 faith
                                      has
                   tracked
backward                   thus redirecting invention’s policy of internal affirmation

                                                                                                          or
her silent slump
enunciates
an emotional understanding toward
needing these branches’ warming shade to
embrace within the wind’s
mathematics of capturing confiscated whimsy

Enjoy!  I will finish with a few songs to accompany your reading:

Trombone Shorty plays "St. James' Infirmary" at the White House:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nkWA539sezY

Wynton Marsalis, Wycliffe "Pinecone" Gordon, et al play "Root Groove" here:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1MB3T0Pq-dE

Gordon's "Naima" is also very pensive and suits Mary and Felino's collaboration:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wMj2zwcaboI

I'll finish with Regina Carter's version of "Mood Indigo":
